¡Hola mi familia y mis amigos!
I'm sorry to hear about Brother Courtier. It's funny how you don't really realize how great a blessing it is to have faithful home teachers visiting your family every month as you grow up, and as I look back now I can see how great of a friend he really is to our family. Let him know he's in my prayers.
Our great focus in the mission right now is working through the members in order to find people to teach. I have found that the secret to being with the members is that we normally don't have to teach them anything, because they already know by our very presence in their house what they need to do. They just need an opportunity to realize for themselves why they chose the restored gospel as a foundational part of their lives, and the difference it has made for them, and then they decide for themselves what it is they need to do, because they feel as Lehi did the grand desires to share those blessings with others (1 Nephi 8:12). As President Uchtdorf says, it's the WHY of the gospel that makes us feel the majestic fire of the covenant.
We shared that with Marcelo, who got baptized a couple of months ago, and he immediately wanted to share that with his neighbor, so we walked outside with him up to his neighbor, Jorge, who had fallen in a motorcycle accident a few months ago and lost his ability to walk. In his wheelchair, he listened as Marcelo humbly shared what a difference he has felt in his life after just 3 months since he met the missionaries and began studying what we teach. Marcelo felt the Spirit so strongly as he shared his testimony that he realized he had so recently gained, even after years in other churches that teach about Christ, that he wanted to accompany us for the rest of the day. He is 28 years old and didn't know how to read, but is learning how to as we read the Book of Mormon with him. He reads 15 minutes a day, with or without us, and has improved his ability to read so much in 3 months, and is already in 1 Nephi 15!
This upcoming week should be pretty good. We just found out that President Richardson from the presidency of the 70 will be coming to our mission this Wednesday, and my ward is going to have our talent show night this Friday, and we're way stoked to invite everyone to it. Quite a few of our investigators even want to share their own talents, and it's a great atmosphere to get to know the members and approach the church building without fear.
Last week we helped some people move from their house. They were moving about 3 streets over from where they were, and we asked if we could help, and then followed their instructions. I'll include the picture of the car, but just know that it was not my idea, haha. Basically, they just threw whatever they had to move on top of their car, tied a rope over it, and drove that over to their next house, but they had absolutely no order in which they stacked things on the car. It was fun, because it was kind of like a game of Jenga or something, but with mattresses and drawers and whatnot, but it was such a Chilean way to move houses.
The relief society president found rice flour and corn flour at the supermarket the other day, so she looked up some recipes and made me some gluten free corn bread and these gluten free alfajores de maicena, that are like two cookies with manjar caramel stuff inbetween, out of the rice flour. It was crazy nice of her and tasted way good. I'm gonna have to look up that recipe she found when I get back so I can make you all some alfajores. I love you all!
Love, Elder Kimball
